Wayne Spikes, a bouncing baby boy, was born to the lucky parents Charles and Virginia Spikes.  Wayne attended public schools in Elizabeth, New Jersey - elementary, junior high, and Thomas Jefferson High School.  He was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War.  Shortly after being honorably discharged in 1971, he became interested in higher education and attended Essex County College in Newark, New Jersey, leaving there to attend Wayne State in Detroit, Michigan.  Later he came back to New Jersey's Kean College where he pledged Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. and finished his studies at Thomas Edison College of New Jersey.  Upon coming back to New Jersey in 1971, he   became employed by the Elizabeth  Board of Education at School #1  “The Community School”. Wayne developed an early dedication and love for his community and began his quest to uplift less fortunate members in his community, this quest lead him to leave the Board of Education and became program coordinator/director of a Non profit organization named Bon-a-Bon which helped the incarcerated re-enter society and become productive citizens.

In 1978, Wayne married his lovely blushing bride Miss. Darlene Burris and out of this union came two wonderful children Khalil, and QiAnah. In 1979 he entered into the apprentice program for the International Association of Bridge, Structural, and Ornamental Ironworks Local 480. Upon completion of the program he became a journeyman ironworker.

Wayne started his career with the Elizabeth Fire Department on July 6, 1982. During his first seven years he worked in various ladder companies, his next 7 years brought him to the seat of the fire as Nozzleman, a position he held at various engine companies as well. Through Wayne’s hard work and enthusiastic dedication he attended various classes and become trained and certified in various areas such as Certified EMT, CONFINED SPACE and TRENCH TECH, HAZ-MAT TECH, and  EXPLOSIVE (bomb) TECH. (He’s the kinda guy you wanna have around in an emergency!)

After becoming a Certified Pump Operator/Driver, Wayne was assigned to Engine 5 in the Elizabeth Port section of  town as pump operator. In 2004 Wayne was promoted to rank of Captain and assigned to Engine 2 in the Bayway section of town.

As one of the founding members of the Vulcan Society of Elizabeth (formally Men of Color Helping All - M.O.C.H.A), he has served in different positions in the organization.  In 2008 he was given the honor to serve the membership as President.
